Introduction

What is Antarctica? Antarctica is a cold island; it is large and also covered with ice. It spreads north; this basically means Antarctica is a continent. It is very big because it is a large mass of land. Antarctica does not contain other countries, and is not owned by any one country.

There are seven continents of the world and Antarctica is the 5th biggest continent in the world.

Where is Antarctica? It is located at the bottom of the world (South Pole/Southern Hemisphere.) it’s surrounded by the Weedel sea and Southern ocean.

What is Antarctica like? Antarctica is a cold place with snow and ice; Antarctica has mountains and glaciers, nobody lives there permanently.

What is the weather like there? Antarctica is the coldest place on the planet earth. Temperatures get as low as minus 50 c! The winds are very strong and blow up to 90 mph.

What type of wildlife is found in Antarctica? It is far too cold for animals to live on the land but the water which is warmer teems with life. There are krill (shrimp like creatures), whales, seabirds, penguins and seals. There are also lots of different types of fish here.

Protecting Antarctica

Why does Antarctica need protecting? Antarctica is the last wilderness on earth. It has many untouched areas and lots of important wildlife. If humans damage it we will lose important species and not be able to study the environment for all the world to know about.

What activities does man do that may harm Antarctica’s environment? They mine it for minerals (gold, aluminium etc). They drill for oil and coal and fish the water so much there will be no fish left disturbing food chains and the ecosystem.

What do scientists want to do to Antarctica? Why? Study the weather and the wildlife to learn about species and global warming.

What do the politicians of ELDC’s want to do? Why? They want to share Antarcticas valuable resources so they can become richer.

What do the mining company want to do? Why? Dig for minerals like gold and coal to sell and make money.

What do the environmentalists want to do? Why? They want to protect and conserve Antarctica and not let anyone destroy or damage the wildlife and environment. They say it should remain untouched for everyone to enjoy.

What do the fishing industries want to happen in Antarctica? They want to fish the rich waters and get as much fish as possible to make loads of money. Many Japanese companies fish here for the krill. The Japanese eat lots of fish, they used to hunt whales too.

The Future of Antarctica

What is the best option for Antarctica? Antarctica should remain the worlds last untouched wilderness. Not let any humans onto Antarctica but preserve it and protect it for wildlife.

Why are the other options not very good? If Antarctica is damaged it will not be available for future generations to learn about the weather, global warming or the wildlife. Animal species must not become endangered or there will be no more of them left (extinct). Over fishing could make many fish become extinct and upset the food chain.

I would like to visit Antarctica because…

We would like to see the wildlife and seals and learn about the food chain and why the weather is so cold and windy. We would like to see the mountains and see animals in their natural surroundings and habitats. We would like to see the whales and the penguins and take photographs of them in the wild.
